What’s Next with Natalie: Cave of the Mounds

On “Mornings With Dave & Natalie,” we asked for your help compiling a bucket list for my first summer in Madison – and boy, did you deliver! I checked off many of your suggestions throughout the summer – and beyond – and am writing about my experiences in this blogYou can also follow along on Life 102.5’s Facebook and Instagram pages, where I’ll be posting as I go. Thanks for helping me make such memorable experiences as I get to know the area!

A friend of mine told me she took her son to Cave of the Mounds recently, and it was a really fun experience for them both. I knew it was on the bucket list listeners helped me compile this summer, so I have been waiting for a good opportunity to take the family.

So, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving when the weather was too cold to do anything outside AND I heard there were Christmas lights — that seemed like the perfect time to go! (The underground ~50-degree temperature was a very nice reprieve.)

The national natural landmark is hosting Cave of Lights through January 12. There are beautiful strands of lights lining all the staircases and reflecting onto the ceiling in many areas, making it a little more fun for kids like my 2-year-old, who may not have ordinarily been as interested in stalagmites and stalactites as my 5-year-old.

I am claustrophobic, and there were a few more tight spaces to navigate than I would have liked, but overall, the experience was pretty cool!

If you like Christmas lights, and Cave of the Mounds is on your sightseeing list, now is a great time to go. (Just be prepared to say “no” 15 times in the gift shop with so many cool gemstones and other keepsakes for the kids!)

Where should I go next?
